picture6Food poverty has been on the increase in the UK since the financial crisis in 2008/2009. The cost of living has increased and food prices have also increased by up to 43.5% in the eight years up to July 2013. Whilst the rise in wages has been a lot slower leaving a large gap between what people are earning and what they require to live a decent standard of living.

Over 2 million people in the UK are estimated to be malnourished, and 3 million are at risk of becoming malnourished. The Trussell Trust (UK’s main national food bank provider) in 2013/14 provided over 330,205 children with three days’ worth of emergency food. This is an increase of 163% on the previous year.

iCare is in a unique position having an already well-established footprint in many towns and cities across the UK with mosques in 43 different locations. Opening the doors of our mosques to the wider community will not only help those that are in food poverty but it will also be a fantastic way of spreading a positive message about Islam as well as removing misconceptions and stereotypes people may have about Muslims.
